Get up close and personal with your Calgary Phil at the Bella! Early music champion Aisslinn Nosky brings her innovative interpretations to some of the Baroque-era's finest orchestral works in this concert of remarkable concertos by Arcangelo Corelli, George Frideric Handel, and J.S. Bach, including the latter's brilliant Orchestral Suite No. 1 and Georg Philipp Telemann's daring Sinfonia Spirituosa.

This performance of J.S. Bach’s masterpiece marks 300 years since it was first performed on Good Friday, April 11, 1727 in the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. St. Matthew Passion is considered one of the most profound and influential works of the Baroque period. Written for double choir, double orchestra, and soloists, the work combines dramatic storytelling with reflective chorales and intimate arias that invite personal contemplation on themes of sacrifice, faith, and redemption. Today, it is widely regarded as one of Bach’s greatest masterpieces. This performance includes our frequent collaborators, Rosa Barocca, having performed major works together including Bach’s St. John Passion, B Minor Mass and Monteverdi Vespers. A stellar cast of soloists round out what will be one of the classical concerts of the year in Calgary and beyond.

Music director Julian Pellicano teams up with the incomparable Kerson Leong for The Four Seasons Re-Composed, Max Richter’s minimalist reimagining of Vivaldi’s iconic work. The Okanagan Symphony Chorus joins the OSO for a dramatic sequence of Baroque music featuring some of Handel’s greatest choruses from celebrated Baroque operas and oratorios interspersed with instrumental music by early masters. The Baroque morphs, and springs to life in this inventive evening of music.

In his entertaining 99th symphony, Joseph Haydn finally gives the clarinet a seat in the orchestra.

Les Génies brings together the remarkable women who helped shape the musical world of the Baroque—as composers, virtuoso performers, singers, and dancers. Too often overlooked by history, these remarkable artists created, inspired, and performed some of the most imaginative and expressive music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
